Dehumidifiers are Indispensable Tools in Flood Damage Cleanup

In flood damage cleanup and restoration professional companies and households alike have used dehumidifiers. These devices are very helpful in completely drying the flood damaged areas of the home.

A dehumidifier is a device that removes moisture from the atmosphere. This is done by condensing water vapor molecules onto a cold surface. When the water vapor condenses it produces dry air that is then heated to its original temperature. The result of this process is drier air, lower room humidity, and better flood damage cleanup and restoration.

Indeed, dehumidifiers are pretty much like an ordinary air conditioning unit. However, instead of just having a cold coil, it also has a hot coil with which to heat the dry air that was produced after condensation. Most modern day air conditioning units now come with dehumidification features.

Some dehumidifiers are well known for their ability to handle relatively large areas and high moisture loads easily. This is a product feature that is important in water damage cleaning and restoration jobs.

There are some dehumidifiers that can remove up to 25 gallons of water daily. These devices also boast of dependable and innovative technology that makes them energy-efficient. This feature literally allows the home or business owner to enjoy great savings on flood damage cleanup and water damage restoration projects. This savings will be more pronounced if you have been planning all the while to call for professional cleaners and restorers.

Some dehumidifiers have been specially built to meet every homeowner’s or business owner’s needs. There are units that are intended for crawl spaces. Some have furniture-like attachments that can be complemented to custom-fit the need even more.

Some dehumidifiers are designed to remove moisture from large or moist basements and other areas with extensive flood damage. These units can be stand-alone units or they can be conveniently placed out of sight and ducted appropriately to multiple rooms. This setup further extends the usefulness of such dehumidifiers in flood damage cleanup and water damage restoration.

There are also dehumidifiers that are so compact making them ideal in homes with relatively tight spaces. These extremely compact and powerful dehumidifiers can manage basements and crawlspaces of up to 1,800 square feet. At the same time, these compact yet versatile dehumidifiers feature low-temperature operation, superior air filtration, and complete functionality and flexibility.

In the mean business of flood damage cleanup and water restoration, dehumidifiers can spell the difference between success and failure.

Some Do’s and Dont’s In Flood Damage Cleanup

If you know that a flood may hit your house, then make sure you are ready for it. A few things you can do before the flood comes (for flood damage cleanup can be messy, and not to mention costly):

* Do not keep valuables in the basement as things that can get easily ruined with water.

* Make sure that your insurance covers flood damages and make sure it is enough to cover the probable cost the damage may cause.

* Make sure that your fuse box and utility meters are well and above the flood level of your house. If you are not sure or if you do not know what the flood level of your house is try asking your local building official or a professional.

What will you do when flood happens? Try to go to a higher ground and do not attempt to drive through the flood for the water can easily sweep your car away.

After the flood, the prospect of restoring your flooded house depends largely on time. That is to say, on how fast your premises as well as your belongings dry.

* So immediately ventilate the wet areas. Open the windows to let the air circulate inside your house or reinforce it with the use of heaters.

* Remove any stagnant water on flat surfaces.

* Dry soaked carpets and rugs as soon as possible. Remove them from wood surfaces to prevent any further damage on the wood.

* Transport electrical appliances to dry environment, remove their cases and you can blow dry them with low pressure air.

* Remove lamps, phones, and any decorative accessories from wet furniture. Drawers and cabinets should be opened for thorough drying.

* To prevent any staining in the carpet, place aluminum squares, saucers or plastics under the furniture legs.

* Keep children as well as pets away from areas that are contaminated.

These are a few but practical things to do in flood damage cleanup but it doesn’t stop there. If there are do’s in a flood damage cleanup, then there are also a few don’ts one must also follow.

* One is do not operate, turn on, use televisions, vacuum cleaners or other appliances if you’re standing on wet floors and carpets. You know what could possibly happen to you.

* Do not use heat to dry interiors in closed buildings. It may cause mildew growth and expand moisture damage.

* Do not leave wet fabrics in place especially if they are on top of wooden surfaces for it will just cause more damage.

* Do not use any outlets unless you are sure that they are safe to use or you have asked the electrician to check and repair them. Avoid stepping on stagnant waters, they contain a lot of contaminants; do not allow pets to play with the mud. They may be contaminated.

It is important to know what you can and cannot do during a flood damage cleanup.

How To Avoid Fake or Incompetent Flood Damage Cleanup Companies

Floods often leave homeowners frustrated about the state of their homes. With all the damage that the flood has caused to their homes, homeowners often don’t know where or how to begin cleaning their homes. Although there are available resources teaching homeowners the proper way of doing flood damage clean up, the work can really be physically and emotionally exhausting for the homeowners who have just suffered from the calamity. Because homeowners want their homes to get cleaned and restored as quickly as possible and because of all the frustration they may be experiencing, they may become desperate enough to sign up with just any flood damage cleanup company that they encounter. This desperation could lead to the poor evaluation of not just the capacity but of the validity of the flood damage cleanup company.

When a disaster strikes and a whole town is suffering from the aftermath of the disaster, there could be individuals or groups that are ready to take advantage of the urgency and the desperation of the situation. Not only are there incompetent flood damage companies that want to make a killing by charging exorbitant fees to the desperate homeowners, there are also people who do not even work for flood damage companies who will pretend to do the service and straight-out scam people of their money.

One of the most important things you must remember to avoid being scammed during this difficult time is to not give pay for any services in advance. Another thing that you must do is to evaluate the validity and the capacity of any company before you sign them up to do any flood damage cleanup on your home. Scams don’t just involve people who will get your money and not get any work done, they also involve companies who have legitimate operations but will provide substandard and unsafe services to clients.

If you know of anyone who has experienced flooding before who hired a flood damage cleanup company, then you should definitely ask them about the flood damage cleanup company that they hired for the service. Getting referrals is always the best way to find good products or services. If you don’t know of any contractor or if you don’t know anyone who had any experience with a flood damage company, then you should try to do background check on several companies so that you can narrow down your choices to the companies who have good histories of customer satisfaction.

You should check how long the flood damage company has been in the industry. The longer a company has been around, the more experience they have with flood damage cleanup and restoration. Also those who have had more years in the industry will be able to provide a good list of satisfied customers.

Before you let in any worker or contractor in your home, you have the right to ask the person for a valid ID. You should also check for the company logo on the vehicle or on the uniform of the worker. You should follow these tips so that you can prevent burglars from entering your home.

Do-It-Yourself Water Removal Ways through Home Remedies

Many times we find ourselves in a situation wherein we need a quick and easy remedy for our problems. Sometimes it could be a broken object which we could simply replace or reassemble. But what do we do if the damage can bring a more permanent injury to our most treasured possessions?

Having water damage to our things could bring a lasting consequence to our property. Although we think that fanning them out can successfully accomplish the water removal process, there are more steps than that. The good news is that we can still perform this by ourselves. People used to think that water removal is a process that can only be successfully done by professionals. There could still be a lot of ways how to effectively make sure that our things remain good as new despite being water logged.

During rainy season, it could get a little hard to avoid for some of our things to get wet. A harder problem is that some of our rooms are invaded by the rain water because of a leaky roof or cracked walls. Of course we start by fixing the roof and wall then we deal with the inside of the room itself. Successfully removing the room of the humidity can be done through some ways.

The simplest water removal technique would be opening all windows and doors, after the rain of course, to allow new air to circulate and go back outside. This can be helped with the use of fans or the air conditioner to gain better ventilation around the area. Also you can buy a dehumidifier which can also help remove the water droplets hanging in the air. While doing this, we should make sure that all materials which can absorb water are out of the room. Carpets, clothes and upholstered furniture are able to do this and with these things present, water removal is not completely done. These absorbent materials should first be cleaned thoroughly to avoid stains. Then they should be put out in the sun and air dried which are both free for all.

Other water damaged articles can undergo successful water removal through freeze drying. Putting them evenly spaced in the freezer would work much better rather than having them stacked or close together. This can minimize water damage on documents. Though we can do effectively do water removal from some of our things, there are still some situations which require the service of water removal companies.

Hiring a water removal company can be costly but some situations really call for it. Excessive flooding in our basements could be one of them since it is very important that the foundation of our homes is not compromised. We should learn to be more efficient in taking care of our things and identify which we can do ourselves. Having to spend money on for professional services for water removal can be worrisome, but at least we have learned how to cut the expenses by doing some of the task ourselves.

Easy Mold Removal Tips for Moms

While molds can indeed damage one’s home structure, a more critical concern especially for moms is how molds can endanger the health of their kids. Mold contamination can trigger a variety of illnesses that can run the gamut from slight headache to serious pulmonary problems. The responsibility of eliminating health-threatening molds is usually undertaken by moms. When it comes to protecting their homes and their kids, mothers would gladly undertake any number of mold removal steps.

If you’re one of those moms who want to protect their family from mold infestation without having to call professional mold removal services, you can do mold removal yourself following the simple do-it-yourself steps listed below.

1. Molds have potential ill effects to one’s health. Make sure that you observe certain safety measures to protect your own health. Call your doctor and ask if you have any health problem that might be complicated by mold exposure. Wear protective mask to avoid inhaling mold spores while doing mold cleanup. Keep skin contact with mold to the minimum by wearing rubber gloves. Wear only clothing that you can readily wash or discard.

Remove your kids from areas of contamination during mold removal and cleanup. You can keep them temporarily in a room where they can play and sleep during mold remediation.

2. During mold removal, keep the infested area well ventilated by opening windows. Another way to encourage air flow and keep moisture level at ideal levels is to run your dehumidifier and fan. In fact, keeping your home well-ventilated all the time is also one way to prevent growth and re-growth of molds.

3. When shopping for a mold removal product, carefully read the labels. Some products may contain chemicals that you are allergic to, or can also threaten your kids’ health. Handle mold removal solutions with care. A safer alternative would be to use an organic mold cleaner. Organic mold cleaners have become a popular preference for many households because they have been proven to be environmental-friendly and safe for human use.

Instead of ready-to-use mold removal product, you can also use bleach solution to disinfect contaminated areas. Another recommended product to use is hydrogen peroxide (borax or boric acid). It has been proven that Borax kill molds effectively. What’s more, borax produces no offensive odor.

If cause of mold growth is flood, it should be your priority to pump out stagnant water and discard saturated porous materials such as contaminated items like beddings, pillows, and comforters. These materials require replacement rather than restoration. This is because no amount of restoration technique can completely eliminate molds hiding inside crevices of fluffy materials.

4. Ammonia and bleach shouldn’t ever be mixed together. You’d create toxic chlorine gas if you do so.

If you have asthma, skin allergy, or poor resistance, then you should set aside money for mold remediation services. Of course, doing mold removal yourself is less costly solution to eliminating molds from your home. However, you should take the do-it-yourself option only when you are fit for doing so.

Mold remediation Method on Wood Surfaces

Mold remediation method would always depend of the type of material contaminated. Non-porous materials, for instance, would only require scrubbing, cleaning, and disinfecting. Porous materials, on the other hand, require disposal: no amount of cleaning can eliminate molds that have saturated sub-surfaces of such materials. Semi-porous materials like woods and plywood need to be evaluated whether they can still be salvaged before starting mold cleanup method.

Most houses interior is made up of wood, and majority of house materials are also made of woods. Because woods can collect moisture, they are also like places for mold growth. Woods are semi-porous materials. How, then, does one proceed with mold remediation on woods?

As it is with other materials, mold remediation is done with the objective of removing every inch of mold material on woods. Now, there are woods with smooth surfaces, and those with hard-to-reach, irregular surfaces.

To clean woods with surfaces, mold remediation methods that can be used include damp wiping or power washing. To wipe contaminated surfaces, use detergent-water mixture. Use a clean rag or towel, and replace towel as often as needed. See to it that you don’t wipe moldy rag on uncontaminated surface. Do not use the same rag over and over again to remove mold from every surface. This is in order to prevent spread of molds and mold spores. What you can is to fold towel, and use the clean part to wipe a new spot.

For mold remediation of molds on hard-to-reach surfaces (such as when you need to clean surfaces with nail edges sticking out), hand wiping is not possible. The best way to clean such surfaces is to use power spray cleaning or media blasting using dry ice or baking soda.

If media blasting with liquid would create water leaks on surface below, dry process blasting is recommended. Dry process blasting involves use frozen carbon dioxide or baking soda. The process should be followed by HEPA vacuum cleaning.

To clean surfaces created by cross-bracing or wood trusses, media blasting/power spray cleaning is also recommended. The process should be followed by HEPA vacuum cleaning.

How effective is sanding in mold cleaning wood surfaces? Sanding is a slow and laborious mold remediation option. It may be used for small surfaces, but where contaminated area is a whole room, sanding is impractical.

After moldy surfaces have been cleaned, drying the areas is absolutely necessary. Mold spores are always present in the environment. No amount of cleaning can wipe out mold spores from the surrounding. If you leave the surfaces dry, you don’t give mold spores a chance for new growth.

Application of fungicide sealant is one method that some mold remediation companies use to prevent future growth of molds. Fungicide sealants prevent buildup of moisture on wooden materials. They, thereby, prevent molds from growing again.

Regardless of whatever mold remediation method you use, it is also absolutely necessary that you seal contaminated area to prevent mold spores from spreading into other areas of your home or property.

Everything You Need to Know About Sewage Backup

There are many things that a property owner should know about sewage backup. It is easy to get lost in the terminology. There is no need to get technical when it comes to this situation. However, there are some bits of information that should be considered as vital. You can forget everything that you know about sewage backup – except for these.

While there is no need to learn the jargon, it is necessary to be well-informed in order to know how to handle the presence of wastewater, if it ever happens in your home.

What is it?

Sewage backup is basically contaminated water that flows backwards and exits at the most convenient outlet. These can range from manholes to toilets. Sewage backup usually has a dark color and has a strong, putrid smell. You will know it when you spot it because it will look exactly how it smells like. Along with the water, sewage backup can also contain solid waste, discarded items, and other debris.

It is important to note that because of what it is composed of, you should not go near the wastewater if you find it in your house. In this situation, it is always better to call a pro.

What causes it?

Sewage backup is caused by the blockage in the pipelines. When water cannot flow easily within the system, due to debris or any other cause, the wastewater has nowhere to go. The pressure builds up which causes the water to backtrack and look for a possible exit point.

There are three culprits usually associated with blockages in the pipes. The first one is flushing solid materials such as toilet paper, trash, and tampons down the toilet. These solid objects can block the pipes between the residence and the city’s main sewage pipes.

The second cause of blockage is by problems found in the pipe itself. Known as structural defects, they can develop naturally as time progresses. Wear and tear can occur in the pipes, which is to be expected. This is usually remedied by regular maintenance and inspection of the system.

Finally sewage backup can be caused by the presence of trees and other plants near the property’s pipelines. The roots of the trees can actually grow into and infiltrate the pipes causing blockages. The best way to remedy this is to plan ahead. Avoid planting anything near the pipes of your house.

Why is it dangerous?

Finding wastewater in your property is dangerous because of its very nature. It is a health hazard. Because this material is composed of waste products, they contain bacteria and parasites that can make you and your family sick. Hepatitis, gastroenteritis, and respiratory problems are only some of the illnesses that can be caused by wastewater in the home. It should be emphasized that the presence of wastewater inside the house is a serious matter. Aside from being unsightly, it can contaminate your home, lessening its value and endangering the health of its occupants.
